Cafe Kula at Grand Wailea – Maui, HI

A reasonable, price and quality, option nestled among the shops at the Grand Wailea.

While the Shops at Wailea are the best option for groceries and many meals in the area, they are not always convenient. While the Grand Wailea has room service, we thought it underwhelmed. Cafe Kula offers a reasonable option for breakfast or lunch at the hotel.

Chairs and seating are across from Cafe Kula in a common sitting area. The inside of Cafe Kula is like a small market with modern Hawaiian decor. Unbelievably fresh pineapples take center stage and they are better than ones you get on the mainland, as is all fruit in Hawaii.

Fresh pineapples

Various snacks and gifts are available in the store, with everything even food orders taken at the counter. Desserts are very good and their ice cream is excellent. Both our kids and all of us found their flavors to be great.

Dining options are reasonable in price and good in quality and portions. Their specialty pizza s run $20-26, and the size is large. At 18” it’s likely the largest pizza on the island or even the islands. You can make your own pizza but their specialty pizzas are interesting. They have three: Haiku Tomato Mozzarella, Spicy Hawaiian, and Wild Mushroom.

The Haiku Tomato Mozzarella pizza

We got a Haiku Tomato Mozzarella one day for lunch and it was able to feed 5 of us (3 adults and 2 kids). Their pizzas are more deep dish in nature; despite our preference for more New York style pizzas, theirs was very good and we finished it all.

We never had a chance to try the Spicy Hawaiian or Wild Mushroom pizzas and I still regret that. The Wild Mushroom pizza comes with Hamakua mushrooms (a Hawaiian variety), Shishito Peppers, and Garlic Aioli. So I imagine an interesting Japanese influence.

The Spicy Hawaiian is advertised as having spicy BBQ Sauce, onions, tomatoes, cilantro, mozzarella, Kalua pork, and Maui Gold pineapples. It sounds good, and no pictures are to be found of it online. We should not have passed up the chance to have a Hawaiian pizza in Hawaii with incredibly fresh pineapples. Don’t make that same mistake yourself, get one NOW.
