One of the more casual options at the shops at Wailea.
While walking around the Shops at Wailea we need to find a place for dinner. With the kids, Ruth’s Chris was out of the question. So we tried Cheeseburger. The entrance had a nice gimmicky feel and the walls are adorned with Hawaiian ads and trinkets. A lot of work and thought went into appropriate decor, including the mosaics at the entrance.
We ordered island fries, coconut shrimp, and fish tacos. The restaurant wasn’t that full, but we had quite a wait for our food. Being a few days after New Years it might have been due to vacations.
The island style fries with Kalua pork were the best option of what we had. Overall the pork was very good as were the nachos. It did come with too much barbecue sauce and cheese for our tastes. But otherwise this was rather good and it came with ample pork. The kids loved this.
We weren’t that impressed with the coconut shrimp, we should have read the menu more closely. After frying the coconut shrimp they toss it in a mango chutney. We thought that ruined the flavor and it tasted horrible to us. It also made the fried coconut shrimp soggy. The parts that didn’t have the chutney tasted good. The shrimp came with fries, and the fries that didn’t touch the chutney were very good. Overall, we think this could have been good without the chutney.
The fish tacos were fine to us. The quality and taste were what would expect from typical restaurant fish tacos. Overall, it wasn’t the best dining experience we had; but the restaurant was kid friendly. One factor that might have mattered is that none of us had a hamburger or cheeseburger, which is in the name. So we can’t speak to their expertise. However, some of us refuse to each ground beef, and we didn’t see (or ask about) alternatives.
